Spartanburg County deputies said a Cowpens man threatened to pour gasoline on his mother, setting her and her house on fire as they argued on Monday.

Deputies said someone called 911 about 7 p.m. saying there was a man inside a Fairfield Road home in Chesnee with a gas can and lighter threatening to burn his mom and her house down.

When they arrived to the house, deputies said the woman pointed to her son, 28-year-old Derrick Lynch, and when he saw them he took off running into the woods and across a creek.

Deputies said they spoke his mother who said Lynch came over but she asked him to leave, so he started poking her in the glasses and forehead.

Then Lynch asked to get into his mother's storage shed to get his moped out, coming back inside with the gas can and threatened her, deputies said.

According to the deputy's report, another woman who was at the house said Lynch held the gas can over his mother's head with the lighter, threatened to burn all of them up, so she called 911.

Deputies said they found Lynch and arrested him on an outstanding warrant, which he told them is why he ran.

The report said Lynch came over to get his second moped because his other one kept breaking down, putting him in a bad mood. When they asked Lynch what happened with his mother, he said they were both in off moods and got into a cussing match when she told him to leave, deputies said.

He told her he couldn't leave without the other moped and was working on it while they argued, but he did not threaten or touch anyone, the report stated.

Deputies said Lynch was charged with first-degree assault and battery in addition to the outstanding warrants.
