POWDERSVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate Cub Scout is being hailed a hero for saving his cousin's life when his quick thinking came from an important lesson he learned as a scout.

Eli Langager, 9, and his cousin Leah Nordman, 7, were playing back in November when Leah began choking on a piece of candy.

Eli sent another cousin in the next room to get help from his uncle and took matters into his own hands by performing the Heimlich maneuver he learned in the Cub Scouts.

"[I was] thinking she's going to die so I need to do that Heimlich maneuver on her," Eli said.

He said he learned the maneuver a year ago when he was a Bear Cub Scout.

"He just acted like it was something that needed to be done," said Leah's mother Amy Chase. "He did it, like if he needed to sweep the floor that needed to be swept."

He will be honored later this month with a special award from the Boy Scouts for his heroic actions.
