LAS VEGAS (FOX5/AP) -
The 27-year-old man charged in the shooting and resultant crash that killed three people on the Las Vegas Strip entered not guilty pleas in Clark County District Court on Monday.
Judge Kathleen Delaney set Ammar Harris' trial date for Sept. 9.
Harris faces three counts of murder and an attempted murder charge in connection to the Feb. 21 shooting and crash that killed Kenneth Cherry Jr., Michael Boldon and Sandra Sutton-Wasmund.
Harris is accused of firing a gun into a Maserati that crashed into a taxi cab. The shooting and crash claimed the lives of Maserati driver Kenny Cherry Jr., cab driver Michael Boldon and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund.
Earlier in the day, Harris wanted to fire his public defender and admit guilt to all the charges. After talking to his public defender, he changed his mind.
"They explained to me if I enter a plea, then I will ultimately have to lie to you about the charges that are stated on paper," said Harris. "I don't want to lie to you."
Boldon's brother Tehran is pleased with the not guilty plea.
"I wanted a trial," said Boldon. "I didn't want him to plead guilty. I want to see everybody. I want to know all the facts."
Some of the facts are in transcripts of grand jury testimony. One witness said Harris told her, "I killed three people and injured six."
A taxi cab dash cam video also shows the suspect's Range Rover racing through the Strip moments before and after the fiery crash that left the cab unrecognizable.
"If Mr. Harris' guilty plea had moved forward and the court had accepted it," said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. "We would have still moved forward seeking the death penalty."
Boldon said he wants to see HJarris on the stand even if it means re-living the pain.
"My brother was not here to give my mother a Mother's Day kiss yesterday," said Boldon. "A Mother's day card or flowers."
Harris also appeared in court Monday for a robbery and sexual assault case. He also pleaded not guilty to those charges. That trial is set for July 8. If Harris is convicted of those charges, it could be used against him in the murder trial.
