DACUSVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Friends and loved ones of two slain Upstate children said goodbye at a vigil held in their honor Thursday.

Pickens County deputies said Carly Simpson, 7, and her brother Sawyer Simpson, 5, died from gunshot wounds Tuesday after their mother Suzanna "Anna" Simpson, 35, pulled the trigger.

To remember and honor the children, a vigil was held at Dacusville Elementary School, where the children went to school.

"This is not a memorial service. It's just the beginning of grieving and a time for prayer," said one organizer, Rev. Ashley McCoy-Bruce.

About 100 people came to the vigil to grieve with the community. Most were kids who had good memories of Carly and Sawyer.

"(Carly) was always helpful," said friend and classmate Matt Pike. "She was so nice."

Teachers said their classes won't forget the children.

Deputies said the children's father, 34-year-old Michael Simpson, was shot in the head and is clinging to life at the hospital. Deputies said Anna Simpson admitted to shooting her family, then taking off in her car and wrecking.

As of Friday morning, a hospital spokesperson said Anna Simpson was listed in fair condition at Greenville Memorial Hospital while her husband remained in critical condition.
