TRUMBULL, CT (WFSB) -

State police said they are investigating the discovery of human remains in a wooded area near the Bridgeport/Trumbull town lines Friday morning.

Investigators said the discovery was made along Quarry Road around 10 a.m. after a search by troopers and K-9s.

"State police cadaver dogs did an alert on what appeared to be human remains," said state police Lt. Paul Vance.

Police have collected evidence from the scene, but have not identified the remains at this time.

"It's pretty alarming," said Tom Rudne of Trumbull. "We were down here having our break and all the cops flying in."

According to sources, the remains were found by a police K-9 that was being used in the search for missing Eastern Connecticut State University student Alyssia Wiley.

Wiley hasn't been seen since April 20 when she said she was going home to West Haven for the weekend. However, she wasn't reported missing until days later when she failed to return to campus.

State police contacted Wiley's family to let them know what they found and that they are only investigating the discovery. There has been no identification.

State police were also searching a reservoir Friday in Meriden near Hubbard Park and an area near ECSU in Williamantic where Wiley was reported missing.

One of the volunteers who has been helping with the search for Wiley showed up at the location where a body was found.

"It's taxing, you just go forward and think positive thoughts," said search volunteer Kathleen Ceccarelli. "I've tried my best to stay neutral and not think on the negative."

The Office of the Chief State's Medical Examiner was called to the scene off Quarry Road to determine the cause and manner of death.

The discovery is being treated as criminal in nature and remains under investigation by state police.

Police said the remains were found on a vacant land owned by a private party, so they spent a good part of the day securing permission.

Investigators said they plan to be out at the crime scene all Friday night.
