A South Carolina sheriff's deputy has died after working three nights of security at the scene of a fire that destroyed 26 condominiums near Myrtle Beach in March.
Horry County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jeff Benton says 50-year-old Deputy Timothy Causey died Sunday at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Benton said Causey was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and acute respiratory following the fire. He was later transferred to the Medical University in Charleston where doctors diagnosed him with the swine flu, he developed pneumonia, and was placed in a medically induced coma.
The exact cause of death was not immediately available. Causey was a 25-year veteran of law enforcement and had worked for the Horry County Sheriff's Office for two years.
The March fire displaced 190 people.
