Police investigate 2 Spartanburg robberies

Posted: Updated:

Two nearby businesses were held up less than an hour apart early Sunday morning, Spartanburg police said.

The first robbery happened at the Domino's Pizza on Union Street about 1:30 a.m.

Police said the restaurant's side door was open because a supply truck was making a delivery, which is how the robber entered the store. Officers said the man demanded money from the cash drawer at gunpoint.

The robber had the employee put the money in a plastic bag, asked about the money in the safe then left when he realized he couldn't get that money, police said. On his way out, police said the robber asked for the truck driver's cell phone but left before he could take it.

The suspect was described as a tall, thin 25- to 30-year-old black male, with a thin goatee, light facial hair, was wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans and a white flat-billed hat.

Then at 2:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Kangaroo Express on East Main Street, which is about 1.5 miles away, after a clerk reported an armed robbery there.

Police said the robber came in, went behind the cash counter and sat on the ground where he proceeded to ask the clerk about the safe and demanded she put Newport cigarettes and cash from the register into a bag.

Police said he asked the clerk for her cell phone, but she didn't have one, then he left on foot towards Avant Street.

He was described as about 25 years old, 5'8" tall, was wearing a gray coat with hood, blue jeans and had a red bandana in his rear pants' pocket.

Police have not said if they believe the robberies are connected. According to the report, this was the third robbery at the Domino's in the past month, including a robbery that happened on April 25.

Anyone with any information about the robberies is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
