Driver leads police on high-speed chase with no tires

WEST MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A man led police on a high-speed chase through several counties overnight after officers said he fled a DUI checkpoint.

Troopers said the man approached a DUI checkpoint in Cherokee County, then turned before police could check him.

Officers followed him, and they said the man took off.

The chase continued through Blacksburg, SC where deputies used stop sticks in an attempt to stop the man.

Troopers said two of the four tires blew on the silver SUV, but the driver kept going into Gaston County with sparks flying and blue lights flashing behind him.

Gaston County deputies joined in the pursuit, but dropped back when the man entered Mecklenburg County. That's when the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department joined the pursuit.

Stop sticks were used once more, again with mixed results.

Officials said the remaining tires were blown out, but the driver refused to stop.

The SUV finally came to a stop miles later on I-85 just before the I-485 interchange in west Mecklenburg.

Troopers said the driver jumped out, hurled himself over the median, and ran across four lanes of southbound traffic before disappearing into a business park up the hill.

Troopers doubled-back and went up the on ramp to try to find him.  Moments later, officers found him.

The man was shocked with a taser while he was being arrested. He was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital to have the taser probe removed, but officials said he'll be OK.

Investigators told WBTV the driver will be charged with DUI, fleeing officials, and driving with no license.
