GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said deputies were investigating the discovery of a body found in a local lake Friday morning.

Mueller said their dog team was doing a search near Lake Whelchel when a scent led them to the lake's banks about 10:40 a.m.

Deputies found a body semi-submerged in the water not far from the Forest Lake subdivision, Mueller said.

Department of Natural Resources agents were called in to recover the body from the lake.

Mueller said they were investigating the death as a homicide unless evidence indicates something else.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said the body was that of 29-year-old Terry Martin Jr, of Gaffney, who was missing since May 19. Fowler said Martin was reported missing by family on Thursday, so deputies began searching near the lake where he was last seen.

Martin was found partially clothed about 20 feet from shore, Fowler said. He said an autopsy showed Martin drowned and there were no signs of trauma or injury.
