Fire crews closed a street in Tyler as they battled a two-alarm apartment fire.
Firefighters responded to an apartment complex at 710 South Kennedy Avenue. The fire started around 5:15 Friday afternoon in an upstairs apartment. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire conditions. Firefighters quickly gained control of the blaze and contained most of the damage to one unit.
During the fire, police saw several
men struggling with a man outside the apartment. The group of men said the man they were holding started the fire.
Police arrested that man, Cantrell Sash, and charged him with arson of a habitation.
Police say the evidence at the scene showed that Sash had deliberately set
the fire in his own apartment.
Kennedy Avenue was shut down at the intersection of Houston Street while crews fought the fire.
