Greenville Co. student tests positive for meningitis

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville County School officials and DHEC are advising parents and students at Woodland Elementary School of a possible case of bacterial meningitis.

In a statement from the school's principal, she said a student had been diagnosed with meningitis, and that DHEC has been asked to treat the case as bacterial - even though officials haven't yet been able to determine whether the meningitis is viral or bacterial in nature.

School officials said Monday they're disinfecting the school, and will continue to do so when students return Tuesday.

Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, confusion, drowsiness, light sensitivity, nausea and/or loss of appetite.

DHEC is advising anyone that has had these symptoms within the past 10 days to contact a doctor.
