Councilman asks SC lawmakers to get involved in TB investigation

NINETY SIX, SC (FOX Carolina) -

State health officials have given tuberculosis skin tests to nearly 600 people in the area of Ninety Six as of Friday.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said 11 people have the disease, and 63 others carry the germ but aren't infectious. All 74 of those individuals are being treated.

Now some are focused on getting the small community back to normal. At least one Ninety Six city official said he's looking to his state elected politicians for leadership, but so far hasn't heard or seen anything from them.

"I would feel better if we were to see a representative here, come out and explain to the town of Ninety Six that they understand what's going on and are keeping it under a microscope, to tell us that they are making sure that DHEC is doing their job and making sure it doesn't happen again," said City Councilmen of Ward Three Todd Mullinax.

Mullinax said he isn't placing blame how the outbreak has been handled solely on DHEC or the school without having all the facts, but believes it's now that the town needs its leaders the most.

"They don't mind coming and shaking hands to get elected, so we'd like to see them when we do have issues," said Mullinax.

FOX Carolina attempted to contact officials with constituents in the Ninety Six area, but were only able to get in contact of one. Rep. Michael Pitts said he would like to see statewide changes on how DHEC and schools handle cases like this in the future.

"We should have a more clear policy on notification of parents and notification of the public based on the results of infection tests," said Rep. Pitts.

Pitts also said he wants his constituents to trust DHEC's leadership, as he does.

"It's difficult to trust anything as large as a bureaucracy, but I have faith in the leadership at DHEC, and I do trust them," said Pitts.
