ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers said a man seen darting in and out of traffic along Interstate 26 was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol's Brian Gilreath said at about 6:15 a.m. troopers were responding to westbound I-26 at mile marker 35 in Asheville after receiving reports of a man darting into traffic.

Gilreath said the man, identified as 56-year-old Scott Hoffman of Asheville, had pulled his car over to the side of the road and put his hood up, then was seen darting in and out of traffic. He said when troopers arrived, they found the car's engine still running.

Before troopers arrived, a tractor-trailer tried to swerve to miss Hoffman but had no room to move over, Gilreath said. He said Hoffman was hit and killed.

Gilreath said another driver reported Hoffman ran out in front of him, forcing him to swerve to miss hitting Hoffman.

The accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
