ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Asheville police said they are still working to identify the body found by a fisherman along the French Broad River on Monday.

Asheville police Sgt. Dave Romick said an autopsy was performed, determining the person pulled from the French Broad River near Emma Street drowned.

Romick said they were unable to use the person's fingerprints because of the body's condition, so they have not identified the person yet.

Investigators are still working to determine who the person is.

A fisherman called authorities after spotting the body near a railroad trestle Monday afternoon. Police blocked off Emma Street for most of the afternoon while officers worked to remove the body from the water.

Police said on Monday they believed the body was that of a 50-year-old African-American man.
