GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Friday and Saturday local law enforcement personnel will be joining forces for the annual "Cops on Top of a Doughnut Shop" fundraiser, benefiting the Special Olympics.

Representatives from the Greenville City Police Department, Greenville County Sheriff's Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol will be collecting donations from the Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop, located at 302 N. Pleasantburg Dr. in Greenville, beginning Friday at 5 a.m. through Saturday, June 15 at 9 p.m.

Those who make a $20 donation will receive a coupon for a free dozen glazed doughnuts. They're also selling commemorative T-shirts and hats for $10 each.

Their goal is to raise $25,000 for the Special Olympics, whose mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joys, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Prior to this event, officers from the same agencies joined together over two days in May for the Law Enforcement Torch Run of 106 miles from Greenville to Columbia for the statewide Special Olympics Games at Ft. Jackson.

Last year's fundraiser on top of the doughnut shop raised in excess of $20,000 for the special athletes last year. As of 3 p.m. Friday, they had raised $7,500.

If you would like to donate, but cannot make it to the doughnut shop, you can donate directly online.
