ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Buncombe County deputy is out of a job after he was charged with driving while impaired and another man is wanted, accused of having the deputy's gun, according to authorities.

In a statement released Monday by the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Van Duncan said Lt. Jason Honeycutt was released from his job following the arrest.

Deputies said Honeycutt was arrested early Friday morning by Asheville police at Mission Hospital on the DWI charge. Police said Honeycutt was treated at the hospital then driven home by his wife following the DWI charge.

According to police, Honeycutt initially called them on Friday to report his vehicle stolen and that someone assaulted him prior to the DWI charge.

Police said they later learned Honeycutt's initial report was not true and said he turned himself in on Monday at 9 p.m. on a charge of filing a false police report.

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office said Honeycutt was hired as a jailer in 1996, working his way to lieutenant. Honeycutt's termination was effective Friday, according to the sheriff's office statement.

Sgt. Dave Romick with the Asheville Police Department said during the incidents of June 14, 34-year-old Franklin Wilkerson obtained Honeycutt's gun and officers have issued a warrant for Wilkerson for possession of a firearm of a felon.

Police said if anyone knows of Wilkerson's whereabouts they're asked to call the Asheville Police Department at 828-252-1110 or Crime Stoppers at 828-255-5050.
