A Clemson fan with an online following said he's raised thousands of dollars for a reward for information leading to whoever vandalized Howard's Rock.
The fan, known online as "Clemson Tom," said an unofficial effort organized on Twitter and other social media has led to $12,000 in donations in less than a day.
Howard's Rock is an iconic piece of Memorial Stadium. Football players touch the rock before they run down the hill onto the football field.
The university said the rock was vandalized sometime between June 2 or 3. Police are investigating.
"Clemson Tom" said the PayPal account will eventually be formalized into a fund. If the suspect or suspects in the vandalism are caught directly through police or university action, the money will be returned to those who donated, he said.
People interested in donating are asked to contact Clemson Tom through his Twitter page or on Facebook.
