SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said that two children were found walking down the street unaccompanied by an adult at the intersection of John Dodd Road and Highway 129 in Spartanburg County.

According to deputies the two children, ages 3 and 5, were spotted by passersby who stopped to help them on Sunday at about 6:30 p.m.

The children told deputies that their mother had left the previous night and returned briefly in mid morning, according to the incident report. The mother, 26-year-old Monique Sanders, gave the children a bowl of grits and told the children she would be right back and left again, deputies said.

Deputies said that the children told them that they were hungry and were walking to their grandmothers house to get something to eat.

Deputies later arrested Sanders, she was charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of a child.
