SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Spartanburg convicted felon, who shot and killed two men breaking into his apartment, will now spend the next six years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Douglas Lamar Williams, 30, was sentenced Tuesday after entering a guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Williams admitted to using a revolver on April 7, 2012, when he claimed to have seen two men trying to break into his apartment unit. Authorities said he announced his presence before shooting the two men, who eventually died from their injuries.

In the days after the incident, the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and the 7th Judicial Circuit declined to prosecute Williams, stating that he was within his rights to protect himself, despite being a felon.

However, federal authorities filed charges against Williams. Williams entered a guilty plea in February before being sentenced to 78 months in federal prison Tuesday.
