A Spartanburg couple was greeted with a rude awakening before work, when they said four or five masked men with guns met them at their door, demanded money and threatened their lives.
Spartanburg Public Safety said it happened around 5:30 on Wednesday morning, on Fairforest Road.
The couple said Sharon Cartledge was leaving for work when it was still dark. Before her husband, George, could turn on the light by the garage, four or five men in ski masks had guns pointed at her. She said she ran through the house, to a neighbor's to call 911. While she ran, her husband said he was confronted by the men on his back porch.
"They said, 'get down! Get down! Get down!' - I got down. One hit me upside the head with the gun. He said, ‘give me the money!' I said, 'I don't have no money!' And one was in the background, he holler, ‘kill him!' I mean, ‘shoot him, shoot him!'" said George Cartledge.
George said when he thought he and his wife's lives were in danger, he gave the men his pants, with his wallet, with more than $400 inside.
He said he's lived in their home for 23 years and has only recently began to feel nervous. He said he's heard of other people in the neighborhood who have been robbed by groups of young men in the last few months. He hopes anyone who may have information about the armed robberies will contact Spartanburg Public Safety.
