Fenway Westfield honors fallen officer

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Citgo sign, check.

Pesky Pole, check.

Green Monster, check.

Throw in a couple hot dogs and you've got yourself the recipe for Fenway Park.

Five years ago, Massachusetts State Trooper Christopher Dolan took these elements and created Fenway Westfield right in his own backyard.

"We built Fenway Westfield back in 2008 as a fundraising tool," explained Dolan.

Since then, every June, Dolan and his family hold the Jeremiah Hurley Jr. Wiffle Ball Tournament.

Named after his late uncle, a Boston Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty, the tournament honors all fallen officers and military service men and women.

Friday night's game honored the memory of one of Westfield's own in blue.

"We wanted to honor Officer Jose Torres and his family for all they've done in our community," said Dolan.

Torres was hit and killed last July while working a road detail.

"He was well respected, humor was his best tool and we'll miss the heck out of him," said Chief of Westfield Police John Camerota.

Torres' widow Kara threw out the first pitch.

His family said they appreciate all the support they've received tonight as well as over the past year.

"My dad loved baseball so this would be the place he would want to be, and the fact the whole community is here for support is amazing," said Jay Torres.

Dolan contacted 90 police and fire departments from across Western Mass to help with the tournament.

He said if it were not for their support, the charity tournament would not be what it is today.

"That's what this is all about, not only the sacrifice of Officer Torres, but the unity of public service agencies," said Dolan.

The tournament continues through Sunday, June 23.
