Spartanburg police are investigating vandalism at the historic Oakwood Cemetery near downtown.
According to police reports, a worker from Floyd's Mortuary noticed several gravestones had been knocked over, broken or otherwise vandalized during a routine check of the property.
The police report states approximately 25 gravestones were damaged. Some of the graves date back to the 1880s, some belong to WWII veterans and some belong to people who passed away just a few years ago.
"The emotion is somewhat horrific that people could be that disrespectful," said Edward Trimmier, who says he has more than a dozen relatives laid to rest in the cemetery.
Oakwood is rumored to be haunted and is even a stop on a Spartanburg city ghost tour. Trimmier says that reputation may be making the gravesite a target for vandals.
"People shouldn't see it as an attraction or a haunted cemetery, people have relatives here, you need to have respect," said Trimmier.
Police said they found tire tracks and aluminum cans in the area where the damage occurred, but have not identified any suspects at this time. They said they will continue to patrol the area.
