CHEROKEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The State Law Enforcement Division and the coroner's office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Cherokee County detention center.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said 35-year-old Antonio Gregory of Gaffney died Wednesday morning at the Novant Health-Gaffney Medical center.

Fowler said Gregory was found unresponsive in his cell by his cellmate, who notified detention center officers.

Fowler said Gregory has been incarcerated since his arrest in June of this year on a shoplifting charge filed by Blacksburg police.

"Mr. Gregory had not been feeling well for the last couple of days according to cellmates. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday morning to assist with my investigation into his death," Fowler said.

It is routine procedure for SLED to investigate prison deaths in South Carolina.
