POWDERSVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson County deputies said a person of interest who was taken into custody has been charged with the theft of a four-wheeler he fled the scene on Friday morning.

Deputies responded to a burglary call at Foothills Motorsports and when they got there, they saw someone trying to run, according to Capt. Garland Major.

Major said the suspect tried to flee on an ATV and shots were fired by the deputy as he tried to stop him, but he got away.

The shots were fired in a parking lot off of Clair Road in Powdersville, according to Capt. Darrel Hill. Deputies said no one was injured in the shooting.

Deputies searched with canines and by helicopter where they later found the four-wheeler and other items of interest, according to Hill.

He said a person of interest was found hiding in some bushes along Highway 81 and led deputies on a short foot chase before he was taken into custody along Highway 153 by a state law enforcement agent.

Major said their search dogs tracked the man to where he was found, where they also found more evidence of the theft.

The person of interest was identified as 29-year-old Jeffrey Gilstrap, of Pickens. He was charged with grand larceny and possession of burglary tools, Major said.

According to his arrest warrant, the ATV was valued at $18,500 and he gave an audio confession.

The store owner told FOX Carolina the thief switched out ignitions in order to start the four-wheeler.
