Torrential downpours and heavy wind cause street flooding, toppled trees

Heavy downpours across the region Monday afternoon have led to flooding of dozens of streets, along with downed trees and power lines.

In Agawam, several trees toppled over in the area of Main Street. Several cars were damaged by those falling trees, and some in the area were alarmed by the strength of the storm.

"It went dark, and then everything started blowing. We all just kind of said 'we need to get out of here' because it was reminiscent of a couple of years ago," said Raymond Rousakis.

In Springfield, several inches of rain ponded on Boston Road making for slow going as drivers tried to maneuver through.

Western Massachusetts Electric and National Grid reported upwards of 800 power outages as of 1 p.m., however that number dwindled throughout the afternoon.

The following storm damage was reported through the National Weather Service Sky Warn system:

  • West Springfield, MA: Rte 20 just west of Elm Street. 2 feet of water in the road with manhole covers.
  • West Springfield, MA: Rte 20 near Ohio Avenue closed due to 2 feet of street flooding and impassable.
  • West Springfield, MA: 0.96" of rain in 50 minutes.
  • Springfield, MA: large tree down blocking Sheldon Street
  • Agawam, MA: Numerous trees and wires down, some on cars and shingles blown off homes in the area of Harvey Johnson Drive, Regency Park Drive, Meadow Street, Hunt Street. Tree down also on Line Street.
  • Springfield, MA: portion of federal street closed due to flooding. Worthington Street also closed due to flooding.
  • Holyoke, MA: Sargeant Street impassable and closed due to flooding. Canal and Dwight Street - one foot of water over the roads.
  • Westfield, MA: Sinkhole on meadow street with manhole covers moved on the street at Meadow and East Bartlett street.
  • Westfield, MA: East Mountain Road on the Westfield/Southwick line closed due to flooding.
  • Southwick, MA: 1.43" of rain in 1 hour.
  • Agawam, MA: Rte 187 at North West Road flooded and impassable.
  • Westfield, MA: 1.40" of rain in 1 hour and Lockhouse road and Archer Street - 6 to 8 inches of street flooding.
