One of the passengers in a car that led troopers on a short chase before it crashed and the driver was killed was wanted by Travelers Rest police, according to the department's chief.
TRPD Chief Lance Crowe said the passenger was injured in Friday's wreck along Highway 124 at Page Drive and taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Crowe said the passenger gave a false name and later learned he was Jashaun Deck, 31, who was wanted since October 2012.
Fearing he may try to flee, Crowe said officers served five warrants on Deck, fingerprinted and photographed him in his hospital room. He said Deck was given a personal recognizance bond left at the hospital for treatment.
Deck was wanted in connection with an Oct. 3 crash that happened along Main Street.
Crowe said Deck was driving his mother's red Mercedes when it slammed into a black truck head-on at the intersection of North Main Street and Scruggs Drive near Travelers Rest High School, then left scene.
Police said Deck had a child in the car when he wrecked and took the child with him when he fled the accident. When police charged Deck at the hospital, Crowe said the child's mother was present but denied any involvement in the October wreck.
The Mercedes was Deck's mothers and she had falsely reported it stolen in Gwinnett County, GA, Crowe said.
Deck was charged with hit-and-run involving great injury, driving under suspension, habitual traffic offender, driving on the wrong side of a divided highway and child passenger restraint violation.
