Progress made in containing Prison Fire near Tucson

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

Aided by rain, firefighters have made substantial progress against a wildfire in the Santa Catalina Mountains overlooking Tucson.

Fire managers report 50 percent containment of the Prison Fire, which has burned 240 acres as of Tuesday.

Rain monitors indicate that the fire received over six-tenths of an inch of rain Monday evening.

The Prison Fire began Sunday night, after one of more than 600 lightning strikes hit the Molino Basin drainage, triggering the blaze.

The fire is burning in light fuels, which have regrown since the 2003 Aspen Fire.

The Prison Fire is named after the site of a World War II prisoner of war camp.

Two crews, a helicopter and two water tenders are fighting the fire. Crews Tuesday are mopping up, and monitoring the perimeter. Full containment is anticipated in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Catalina highway congestion from water tender activity should no longer be a problem.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place, which prohibit campfires, charcoal grills, smoking, welding and target shooting until further notice. Fireworks are always strictly prohibited on the Coronado National Forest, and federal public lands in Arizona.

The prohibitions carry criminal sanctions for those convicted of violations of the order, as well as civil responsibility for suppression costs for fires created by the prohibited activity.
