One of Prescott firefighters killed was expecting first child

GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

You could see it in his smile, the pure joy Anthony Rose had of becoming a dad.

But the 23-year-old firefighter will never get the chance to meet his daughter, who's expected to arrive this October.

"He was overjoyed about having his child," said Rose's uncle, Adrian Rose. "He would have been a great father to that child."

Rose was one of 19 Prescott firefighters killed Sunday, while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire.

Family and friends sat down with CBS 5 News Tuesday to talk about Anthony Rose, who moved to Arizona as a misguided teenager, but quickly grew into a man, dedicating his life to protecting others.

"It hits really close to home because we loved Anthony so much," said family friend Danielle Hicks. "The bigger picture is about all those fine young men who lost their lives and left all those people behind that loved them. There are a lot of people hurting in Arizona."

Loved ones described Anthony Rose as a special young man who never had a bad thing to say about anybody.

He'll always be remembered for that big "cheesy" grin that he carried around wherever he went, his uncle said.

Family friend Daniel Hicks said that Rose was well aware of the danger he faced with every wildfire, but he was always ready to do what he loved.

"That's the type of guy he was, he knew what he was getting into," said Dan Hicks. "He knew where he was and the risks involved didn't matter. He'd never second guess any of that."

"He's my hero," said Adrian Rose. "I loved him very much."
