More than a dozen people have been displaced after a fast-moving fire ripped through Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood early Wednesday morning.
Nobody was injured, but multiple pets died in the fires.
Fire officials said they received word of the fire on Chase Avenue at about 5 a.m., and fire crews from Longmeadow were called in to assist the Springfield Fire Department in extinguishing the flames.
"One of the problems with this fire was we had a water main break further down on Main Street. One of the breaks of that nature caused all the pressure to go to nearly nothing," said the aide to the Springfield fire commissioner, Dennis Leger.
The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating. Officials are calling the fire suspicious. They believe it started on the front porch of 48 Chase Ave. and spread to the home next door. In total eight homes were damaged and multiple vehicles were destroyed.
"Fire can double in size every minute under the right conditions, it looks like it had a good head start before we got here," said Leger.
In addition, officials said, there was a minor gas leak during the fire that forced officials to move residents away from the scene for a part of the morning.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials from the American Red Cross said they assisted 24 people after their homes were damaged or destroyed.
Fire officials estimate the fire caused around a half million dollars in damage in total to homes in the neighborhood.
