FOREST CITY, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Forest City firefighters said they rescued two boys from the fast-flowing Brackett Creek on Tuesday.

Heavy rain caused the river to rise and the rapids to flow faster than children swimming in the creek realized, firefighters said.

Two boys, ages 11 and 14, were rescued from the creek by firefighters after one of their dads had tried to rescue them but was unable, according to firefighters.

FOX Carolina spoke with one of the boys, Nick Gossett, who described how frightening the experience was.

"It was just horrifying and I was so scared," Nick said. "I thought I was going to drown."

"I was holding on for dear life. I was like 'please Lord don't let this break, just don't," continued Nick.

Rescuers from the Forest City Fire Department arrived within minutes of getting a 911 call, according to Nick's father, Tim Gossett.

Firefighters said Tim Gossett was able to get back to shore after trying to help with the rescue but was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Nick says he probably won't ever swim in th\e creek again and when asked to say something about the firefighters that saved him, he said, "God bless you and thank you."

The Daily Courier reported that children often swim in the creek off of Greenfield Drive.
