GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Travelers Rest man has died after an accident involving fireworks, according to Mike Ellis of the Greenville County Coroner's Office.

Robin Rhodes Smith, 54, died of penetrating blunt force trauma to the chest, according to Ellis.

Smith was attempting to set off a firework labeled "Lock and Load", which shoot multiple fireballs, Ellis said.

According to witnesses, Smith lit the charge holding the tube, but the charge didn't go off, Ellis said.

Smith took a pocket knife and drilled a hole into the projectile and inserted a fuse from another firework, he then lit the fuse and dropped the projectile back into the tube, according to Ellis.

The 12-inch tube was pointed away from his chest, but witnesses say he may have put the projectiles in upside down, according to Smith.

The fireworks then discharged injuring Smith.

He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, according to Ellis.
