Supporters shave head for teen with rare cancer

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Just behind the preserves and the peaches, shoppers at the Denver Downs Market in Anderson County buzzed around, and so did the sounds of clippers Friday afternoon.

They bought fruits and vegetables, and donated to support Hannah Powell.

"It's nice to have someone to lift you up," Powell said.

At 17 years old, Powell is battling a rare form of breast cancer called Phyllodes, which is a tumor.

"It is an aggressive cancer, so it's going to spread throughout my body. It's a hard thing to deal with, but I have all these people that are behind me," Powell said.

She said less than 1 percent of women get this form of breast cancer.

"I could sit around and cry about it and dwell on it, but it's not going to change it," Powell said.

So, that's why many girls decided to dye pink streaks in their hair, and guys got their heads shaved.

"As a community, we've come together to support her," Jeremy Bell said.

Bell decided to show his support by shaving his hair.

"This is a way to support her, pray for her, and her family and to just love them during this difficult time in life," Bell said.

Some of them at the market are strangers, others are family members and close friends.

"She's like a daughter I have never had," Terha Householder said.

She put together the "Shave Your Head for Hannah" event.

"The sorrow or the sadness that one might be feeling, and you know puts it in a different perspective and makes you think of things in a different light," Householder said.

And Powell said the support that was shown, already made her feel better.

Organizers of the event said donations will help the Powell family pay for medical bills. Friends have also created a "Prayers for Hannah Powell" Facebook page. Hannah Powell will soon travel to Vanderbilt University and Houston TX for special treatment.
