SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said they were able to catch a man shortly after held up a Spartanburg convenience store, stealing cash and cigarettes.

Spartanburg County deputies said they were called to the Kangaroo Express on Asheville Highway about 11:45 p.m. Sunday where a man had fled after robbing the store at gunpoint.

According to a deputy's report, the man entered the store, crouched near the door then pointed a gun at the clerk saying, "Give me the video."

The clerk told the man she did not have access to it, so he asked her to open the safe, which she couldn't do either, deputies said. The suspect replied, "Just give me the 20s," took the case and two cartons of Newports then ran out the door, according to the report.

Before fleeing, deputies said the suspect forced the clerk at gunpoint into the store's back room. Deputies said they found the man a short time later.

Lonnie Smith, 30, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a stolen pistol.
