NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

When an eighth-grade student had a heart attack at school recently, a quick-thinking athletic trainer took action and saved his life.

Megan Lawrence wasn't even scheduled to be at Maplewood High School that day when the incident happened.

The trainer jumped into action when she heard that a student's heart had stopped beating.

Lawrence tried using the school's automated external defibrillator to revive him. When that didn't work, she saved his life with CPR.

"It's something that doesn't happen very often. You're not able to bring somebody back very often. I hope he's doing well and is healthy. I'll be teaching here next year, so I might even have him as a student time in the future," said Lawrence.

The school system honored Lawrence in a special ceremony held on Tuesday. As a surprise, they reunited her and the student for the first time since she saved his life.

"I saw him, and I got a little teary eyed. The memories kind of rushed back to the events of that day," said Lawrence.

Maplewood High School principal Ron L. Woodard called her actions "true courage under fire."

This fall she'll start her new job as a full-time teacher at the high school.

The student that Lawrence saved is recovering well.
