ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson police said they were called to check on a local home where they found a 6-year-old girl covered in sores, with bugs crawling around the condemned home.

Police said they were called to the home on June 19 and found the girl sitting outside eating, with flies landing on her food.

According to the officer's report, the girl was covered in mosquito bites and had stepped on a nail somewhere inside the home, which had not had power on or running water for several days.

Police said flies flew around the inside of the home, roaches crawled on the kitchen counters, and in the bathroom, the toilet was filled with human waste.

A building codes officer arrived and told police they had condemned the home a few days earlier, according to the report.

The girl and another child were taken to the hospital to be checked out and then placed in protective custody, police said.

Police said the mother, 29-year-old Linda McKinley, was arrested Monday on two counts of unlawful neglect of a child.
