LAKE GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After surviving a shocking medical emergency last year, an Upstate couple is dealing with more bad luck after they say something very special to them was stolen.

Following a camping trip during the weekend, they said their kayaks, including one specially made for a man living with a disability, are now missing.

The theft has outraged many in the community who know its owner, former fire marshall of the Mauldin Fire Department Gordon McDonald. McDonald is recovering from a stroke that initially left him paralyzed on one side.

McDonald is in the middle of what some call a miracle recovery after he suffered a tragic stroke while on a cruise in Mexico, eight hours away from a hospital and medical treatment. The stoke affected 75 percent of the left side of his brain, initially leaving the right side of his body not functional.

Since then he's continued to regain some physical functions with the help of kayak that was made specially for him - until it went missing when the couple were sleeping in their camper at their slot at the state park at Lake Greenwood.

"It's kind of like being home in your backyard. You take things and set them out and make yourself at home," said Debbie McDonald. "It was a real shock. I couldn't believe it when I woke up, and the kayaks were missing."

They asked their neighbors camping nearby for clues, reported the case to the Greenwood County Sheriff's office, but so far haven't gotten them back.

Now Debbie is pleading for the return of her husband's expensive kayak. It's equipped with peddles that works a muscle group he's been training to recover.

"It would help with recovery a lot,"said McDonald. "He's not in physical therapy anymore, and so it will be great to get use into his right leg to do something he loves to do and makes him feel normal."

Gordon's kayak is a new Hobie Adventure Mirage. It is light gray, 13' long and weighs about 100 lbs. Debbie's is Ocean Kayak that is hot pink, 11' long and weighs about 42 lbs.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of the missing kayaks, you are urged to call the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department at (864) 942-8600.
