The search has begun for the remains of a Westfield teen who was killed by a serial killer more than two decades ago.

Massachusetts and New York state police dive teams began to search Greenwater Pond in Becket for Jamie Lusher's body on Tuesday.

Officials say the task will be a challenge, but they are hopeful.

Lusher disappeared back in 1992. He was last seen riding his bike toward his grandmother's house in Blandford.

Monday authorities announced that convicted killer Lewis Lent confessed to abducting and murdering the teen. Lent has provided information to officials that Lusher's remains are located in the Berkshire County pond. The search began in an area off the shoulder of the road eastbound on Route 20. That location is where intelligence suggests that Lusher's body was left.

Around 18 divers and half a dozen boats took part in the search.

Members of Lusher's family including his father and sister looked on throughout the day hoping to finally get some closure.

A line search was conducted and two side scan sonar devices were deployed. That equipment creates a sonar image of the bottom of the pond to help alert officials to any objects that appear out of place.

Officials are hoping to find skeletal remains, or clothing or any other object connected to Lusher.

"The passage of almost 21 years obviously is a factor. We are hoping to find anything at all that will corroborate that Jamie Lusher was put here and that will add to his family's sense of closure," said Dave Procopio, of the Massachusetts State Police media relations unit.

The state police air wing also assisted in the search. So far no remains of the teen have been located.

If Lusher's remains are not found during the three days slotted for the search, state police say they will come back and search the pond when there is time.
