Robbery suspect killed in shootout with deputies

Posted: Updated:

The Richland County Sheriff's Department said a robbery led to a shootout involving deputies Thursday evening on Broad River Road that ended with the suspect dead.

Deputies said a man robbed a business in the 4100 block of Broad River Road at about 7 p.m. and led deputies on a pursuit, where he crashed his vehicle at Broad River and Kennerly Road.

After the crash, the suspect exchanged gunfire with deputies. The suspect was killed.

"The suspect in the truck immediately started shooting at officers," said Sheriff Leon Lott.

Deputies said the truck the suspect used as a getaway vehicle was reported stolen Wednesday with a gun inside. Investigators said that gun was used to fire at deputies.

Several patrol vehicles were struck by bullets.

"We've got one patrol car that's got four bullet holes in it.  We have another one, the windows shot out of it," said Lott. "We had an officer who was hit in the foot by a ricochet.  He's okay. Our officers returned fire and at this point, killed the suspect."

The suspect's name has not been released.  Deputies plan to release more information in a 2:00 p.m. news conference Friday.

During the chase, deputies said the suspect ran another vehicle off the road.

The intersection of Kennerly and Broad River Roads was closed for several hours, but was open in time for the Friday morning commute.
