State police are investigating an early morning accident that claimed the life of a New Jersey woman.
According to State police, troopers from the Turnpike Barracks in Charlton responded to the report of a wrong-way operator. The operator was observed by a toll collector driving eastbound on the Mass Turnpike (I-90) in the westbound lanes.
A short time later, a cellular caller reported a crash involving multiple vehicles, including one on fire, between Exit 10 (I-290/I-395, Auburn) and the Charlton Barracks.
State Police said a 66-year-old female from Toms River, N. J. was deceased on scene. The wrong way operator, a 33-year-old male from Leominster, was arrested and transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester with non-life threatening injuries. At least one additional party was also transported to area hospitals.
The westbound lanes of I-90 were closed until approximately 8:50 am, while crews reconstructed the scene.
