Animal lovers are scrambling to rescue feral cats and kittens living under an abandoned DeKalb County apartment complex before it is demolished.

A former tenant at Oakcliff apartments told CBS Atlanta they were told to move out by the end of June. The complex has been abandoned since then and neighbors said it is slated to be torn down.

At least a half-dozen cats and kittens live underneath three buildings on the property located along Briarcliff Road in the Atlanta portion of DeKalb County.

"As long as I ever been coming around here and living here, there's always been cats running around everywhere you go," said former tenant Geoff Smith. "You can hear them at night messing around and doing what cats do in the evening."

"They deserve to eat," said a tearful Joann Stevens who feeds the stray cats daily. "Animal groups have had a lot of response of people who will take them."

After trapping, the cats will be spayed or neutered and vaccinated and released in a safe location.

"At least pick them up and take them to a shelter or something," said Smith. "Don't just tear a building down on top of them, that's not OK."

DeKalb County Animal Control officers showed up at the site on Monday and offered to set traps to catch the stray cats. However, they told rescue groups that they did not have the resources to check the traps.

The director of the Lifeline animal project said her group is now working with volunteers who are willing to trap and remove the cats from underneath the building and seal the entrances prior to demolition so that the cats will not be killed.

Volunteers expect to set traps at the apartment complex on Tuesday.
