SALEM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The owner of the business who rented a Clemson University Student his life jacket and kayak before his drowning faces a misdemeanor charge.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, Charlie Michael, the owner of Jocassee Outdoor Center, gave Anlin Wang, 25, the wrong life jacket before he drowned in March.

Wang was kayaking with his wife on Lake Jocassee when their boat capsized. They were both wearing life jackets but he was unable to swim to shore, according to Oconee County Fire Chief Charles King.

DNR investigated the drowning and said the center's owner gave Wang the wrong size jacket. DNR said he also rented the kayak from the center. The owner was charged with failure of livery.

DNR said the right size life jacket is key to keeping boaters safe.
