GRAY COURT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

ZF Transmissions announced Friday that it will expand operations in Laurens County by opening ZF's first passenger car transmission plant in the United States.

The expansion is expected to create 1,200 new jobs by the end of this year, with plans for further growth. The company says that, by 2016, the number of people employed by ZF in South Carolina will increase from 1,200 to 1,650 and by then their total capital investment will be near $385 million.

Gov. Nikki Haley was in Gray Court on Friday for the announcement about the expansion and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

In a news release, Haley said, "ZF continues to show its commitment to growth in South Carolina, and to professional training for its employees. Today's announcement indicates that ZF sees South Carolina as the right place for its business."

ZF is a global supplier of driveline and chassis technology. The Gray Court plant will produce about 1.2 million transmissions each year.

ZF is based in Germany. The company says this Upstate expansion is part of ZF's largest single venture outside of Germany.
