Northampton residents taking precautions against mosquitoes

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

It was 70 degrees and sunny at Sheldon field in Northampton Tuesday night, the perfect time for mosquitoes.

"Well, I have noticed the mosquitos are worse this year than usual," said Erin Buzuvis of Northampton.

But the ladies of the Mary Vazquez Softball League didn't let the mosquitoes get in the way of a game.

"It's not stopping us," Buzuvis said.

People outdoors in Hampshire County are being advised to take extra precautions after a sample of mosquitos collected from Northampton tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Some ladies on the team say they're trying whatever they can to keep the itch away.

"My wife and I cover ourselves in bug spray, and they're still after us," said Terry Lipinski of Leeds.

The Department of Public Health wants people there and in surrounding areas to take precautions against getting bitten by avoiding peak mosquito hours around dusk and dawn, wearing long pants and socks, and reaching for bug spray with DEET.

"I'm outside a lot. I have horses, so it makes me very nervous," Bridget Campbell of Hatfield said.

With the recent findings, people downtown and out on the ballfield say they will take more steps against mosquitoes.

"I can't say I'm the best about putting bug spray on, but now that I know it's around, I'll definitely be more careful," Campbell said.

"Yes, I think we should. I've got a team first aid kit and I got to stock it with some bug repellent," Buzuvis said.

Eastern equine encephalitis was also found just down the road in Amherst. So far, no humans have been infected.

Northampton public health officials say they will continue to monitor the situation.
