GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A pedestrian died after he was hit by two tractor-trailers, one of which fled the scene, along Interstate 85 in Gaffney Thursday morning, according to troopers.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said a witness reported seeing the man walk along the white line northbound Interstate 85 at the 91 mile marker when he stepped into the path of the first truck.

As the man was hit, he was thrown into the path of a second truck and hit a second time, Fowler said. Troopers said the truck that hit the man first fled the scene, and they are looking for that driver.

"The impact was so great, he was knocked out of his shoes," Fowler said.

The victim was identified as John Swofford, of Gaffney, Fowler said.

Swofford died from blunt force trauma, according to Fowler. He said the man was between 35 and 45 years old, 5'10" tall, weighing 160 pounds, with graying hair and gray Carhatt pants and brown, low-cut hiking boots.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Troopers said they were investigating the wreck as a fatal hit-and-run because one of the vehicles left the scene.

A FOX Carolina iWitness said traffic was moving slow around Exit 92 as troopers were investigating the wreck. A FOX Carolina crew at the scene said all lanes of traffic were open but the exit ramp at 92 was congested because troopers were reconstructing the wreck until about 7 a.m.

Troopers said they would release more information about the tractor-trailer they are looking in connection with the fatal wreck.

Anyone with information about the identity of the man is asked to call the coroner's office at 864-487-6225, and anyone with information about the wreck should call the Highway Patrol.
