BURLINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

After enduring more tragedy than any family should ever have to, Dr. William Petit Jr. and his wife, Christine, announced they're expecting their first child together during a sit down interview with Eyewitness News.

WFSB Anchor Kara Sundlun visited the Petits for an exclusive interview at the Burlington home, where they were taking care of her 2-month-old niece.

The couple announced they are expecting a baby, which is due Dec. 3. They have decided to be surprised about the child's gender.

As far as names, the joyful couple says it will likely be William Petit the third if it's a boy. So far they haven't agreed on any girl names yet.

Dr. William Petit and his entire family were tortured at their home in Cheshire on July 23, 2007.

Two men, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky, killed his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and his two daughters, Hayley and Michaela.

Hayes and Komisarjevsky were both sentenced to death, and both their attorneys have filed appeals.

Christine Petit, who is a professional photographer, is busy with an exhibit now, which is helping keep her mind off the first baby jitters.

Dr. Petit is running the Petit Family Foundation created to honor the great work, and memories of Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela.

The Petits will also be celebrating their first wedding anniversary on Aug. 5.
