To tip or not to tip?

Posted: Updated:
DUNCAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It gets busy at the Clock Diner in Duncan on Friday nights, and that's when the co-owner, George Chaulkas, helps out in the kitchen. He said he loves to see his regular customers walk in the door.

"Gratitude is what I get out of it when people come back and ask for me by name," Chaulkas said.

His family opened the Clock nearly 18 years ago, and he said customers know may of the serves by name. So, he said, those customers often tip after a sit-down meal and even for take out.

"If they do feel the urge to leave a little bit of extra money for the service - whether it's at the window or to go - they're still providing a service," Chaulkas said.

However, when some see a tip line on their receipt for a carryout order, they scratch through it.

"It does bother me, but to be honest with you, I don't feel obligated in the least bit to leave a tip," Michael Yacavon said.

FOX Carolina caught up with at a shopping center in Greenville. He said he's usually a 20-percent tipper, but he won't tip for a pickup order.

"Which is different to me than somebody's that's waiting a table or performing some other kind of act that seems like it's a little bit above and beyond," Yacavon said.

According to Etiquette, customers should tip at their own discretion, shouldn't feel obligated to tip for pickup orders, but should leave a 10-percent tip if food is brought to a car.

"They're really just handing it off," Apryl Hunter said as she walked to her car with ice cream in her hand.

She said she doesn't tip if she doesn't feel like she's getting a service.

"When I come and pick up food, that's me picking up my food," Hunter said.

And, Chaulkas said, if a customer tips, it's a compliment and a way to let servers, cashiers or cooks know they're appreciated. He said his employees work really hard. Cooks, cashiers and servers all get paid differently, and many of them have families.
