SUN CITY, AZ (CBS5) -

A dog that had been beaten and left for dead is hailed as a hero for helping save a man from serious injury or even death at his Sun City home in July.

Chips was in the right place at the right time, and his constant barking didn't stop until he got his owner's attention.

"I don't know why he came to my rescue," said 88-year-old Jim Treece.

Treece was extremely lucky that man's best friend lived nearby.

Working in the lawn of his Sun City home, Treece found himself in some trouble.

"On my way back to the house I somehow stumbled and fell," Treece said.

His neighbor was alerted by Chips' constant barking.

"You cried, yeah, you cried," said Bonnie Dodson in an affectionate voice to her dog.

Dodson, Treece's neighbor, recently moved to Arizona from Georgia. She an obvious dog lover, having taken in several strays.

Chips, a black-lab mix, had been badly abused when Dodson found him wandering near her home before she took him in.

"He heard the man crying for help," Dodson said.

Chips started barking and whining relentlessly until Dodson got up and went outside with him.

"He cried and cried and cried at me while I was watching TV," Dodson said.

Chips wasn't the only voice that would be heard.

"I was yelling, 'Help! Help!' and fortunately the dog heard me and rescued me," Treece said.

Well, Chips had a little help from Dodson, who found Treece on the ground, unable to get back to his feet "He was in the stones, 105 degrees, and the stones were burning him," Dodson said.

"If it hadn't been for Chips crying, I wouldn't have known he was down," Dodson said.

Dodson ran back inside to call 911 and paramedics quickly arrived and treated Treece, who suffered just some scrapes on his knees.

Chips, once discarded but forever loyal, came to the rescue and he was hailed by the entire neighborhood as a hero Sunday night.
