Upstate, western NC communities prepare for National Night Out

Communities from across the nation will participate in the 30th annual National Night Out Tuesday, including many in the western Carolinas.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness in local communities by encouraging residents to get out, meet their neighbors and build relationships with neighborhood watch groups and local law enforcement.

The goal is to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The following National Night Out events are scheduled for our area:

In Asheville starting at 5:30 p.m., police and fire departments, along with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, will be at Carrier Park on Amboy Road from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be food, raffles and safety demonstrations.

In Mauldin starting at 5 p.m., the Mauldin Police Department will be at City Hall until 8 p.m. There will be free food, K-9 demonstrations and public safety information. The police department will also debut its community services humvee.

In Pauline starting at 6 p.m., Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright will attend the Pauline Neighborhood Watch's event at the Carolina Farm and Wildlife Supply at 2640 Hwy. 56, The event lasts until 8 p.m. Other specialized units from the sheriff's office, the Department of Natural Resources, EMS, the Regional One helicopter and a local fire department are scheduled to be at the event in addition to self-defense and concealed weapon information exhibits.

In Spartanburg starting at 6 p.m., Mayor Junie White, City Council members, police officers, firefighters and the city of Spartanburg staff will visit the following neighborhood events throughout the evening:

Archibald Rutledge Apartments/Barksdale, Cammie Clagett Apartments, Camp Croft Apartments, Carriage House Condominiums, Cleveland Park/Northside, Collins Park, Converse Heights, Forest Park, Hampton Heights, Heritage Court Apartments, Highland, JC Anderson Apartments, JC Bull Apartments, Kensington Manor Apartments, Liberty Square Apartments, Maxwell Hills, Pine Forest, Pineview Hills, Prince Hall Apartments, South Converse Neighborhood Association, Summer Place Apartments, Summer Hill, Tobias, Victoria Gardens Apartments and Wadsworth Hills.
