Funeral arrangements are set for former Clemson All-ACC basketball player Vince Yockel, 77, who died at his home in Greenwood, Wednesday evening.
A memorial service will be held at Greenwood Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, located at 1425 Montague Avenue on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.
Yockel was a Clemson basketball star from 1955-56 season through the 1957-1958 season. In his three years playing on varsity, he played in 74 games, averaging 18.2 points per game. He still holds the third best in Clemson history, on a per game basis.
For his career, Yockel had 32 games with at least 20 points scored. During his senior year, he lead his team to win against Wake Forest, when he scored 30 points, and led the Tigers to their first ACC road win.
The three-year starter was named to the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in1982.
Yockel graduated from Clemson, and raised his family of five children, here in the upstate with his wife. They followed in his footsteps, and graduated from Clemson, as well. Each of his children, went on to have kids, and at least one of those children graduated from Clemson as well.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, located at 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
