Results in on second round of Greenwood TB testing

NINETY SIX, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It can safely be said that in the town of Ninety Six, people are still frustrated and worried.

Test results came back Tuesday for hundreds who had a second round of tuberculosis tests over the weekend, all stemming from an outbreak earlier this year that left dozens sick at Ninety Six Primary School.

"I've been on everything trying to figure out what's going on," said Klarissa Wylie. "At first, I was like, 'Oh, yeah my kid's OK.' But it was a rude awakening because I was in tears."

Wylie's son came back with a positive test for tuberculosis infection on the first round of tests. She's having the rest of her family get tested just to be safe.

"It's a scary thing," she said.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental control said they offered the tests to those who came back negative on the first round of tests in what they're calling an "abundance of caution."

DHEC also said in two months a lot can change.

"There is the possibility that some people that came up negative several weeks ago, may have tested negative at that time, but that's because the germ might not have reached a detectable level in their body," said Jim Beasley with DHEC.

Some parents told FOX Carolina they came back with positive results on their skin tests, meaning they have the tuberculosis infection.

Others in town said they are still worried, especially with school a week away.

"You have to worry about who they've been around, who didn't get tested, and who didn't get notified, and it's going to be that revolving circle if they don't cover everybody," said Pati Riggins, a grandparent of a Ninety Six Primary School student.

Ninety Six has learned a lot about TB in the past two months. But right now, they just want it to be over.

"It's still confusing because it's just a whole big mess," said Wylie.

DHEC is due to release new numbers to the media as well.
